J’ai quelques autres histoires d’amis et de connaissances qui ont été pris d’un violent mal de coeur pendant la projection d’À l’ouest de Pluton. Je me demande si c’est seulement dû à la caméra-épaule ou si ça peut être dû aussi à la violence des souvenirs douloureux d’adolescence qui peuvent nous happer à tout moment lors de l’écoute de ce film. À méditer…

A l´ouest de Plutón, (Henry Bernadet, Myriam Verreault), (”Al este de Plutón”) es también una pelicula sobre adolescentes, en este caso canadiense. Primero vemos un montón de adolescentes en un colegio, haciendo una exposición oral sobre qué cosa los apasiona, o hablando de política, o haciendo deporte, o simplemente vegetando. Luego, una de las chicas invita a una fiesta, en la que los mismos pibes enloquecen y destrozan un sillón, y roban un cuadro familiar patético… Realmente nos hacemos parte de esa diversión tonta, de esos diálogos estupidos pero divertidos y de lo que no deja de ser una travesura de borrachos. Cuando todos salen de la casa, para algunos sigue de fiesta, pero para el hermano mayor de la dueña de casa empieza la persecusión de los ofensores. La historia de desmembra, y vemos por un lado a los perseguidos (que nunca son encontrados), al hermano (que nos permite preguntarnos quien está mas sacado, si los adolescentes borrachos y drogados o el, con su bagage emocional) y un padrastro que en su búsqueda de estrechar vínculos con su hijastro, termina haciéndolo con un desconocido. Si bien el tema de la juventud y la adolescencia es uno de los que mas me gustan, y elijo las peliculas que abordan estos temas, creo que esta es la mas acertada, la mas realista y la que mas se acerca a los adolescentes que yo conozco. El buen tino de los directores hacen que nos acerquemos a ese mundo (que para que negarlo, alguna vez fue el nuestro) sin escándalo, sin juzgar, y haciéndonos pasar un gran momento.

‘Moscow, Belgium’ wins Best Feature Award at BIFF 2009

Moscow, Belgium, by director Christophe Van Rompaey, has won the Mary-Jean Mitchell Green Award for Best Narrative Feature at the 12^th Bermuda International Film Festival.

The award was announced prior to the festival’s closing night film presentation on Saturday by the Features Jury of film journalist and critic David Poland and Randi Emerman, executive director of the Palm Beach International Film Festival.

Ciao Bella, by director Mani Masserat-Agah, and West of Pluto, by directors Henry Bernadet and Myriam Verreault, were given Special Jury Prizes in the Narrative Features category.

“Moscow, Belgium is a portrait of a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown that creates a breathless intimacy,” Mr. Poland said. “Such filmmaking is rarely seen in modern cinema today.

With Ciao Bella and West of Pluto, in a time when cinema for teens seems to inevitably mean stupid, these two films take a thoughtful and honest look at real life through fiction.” 

The Documentary Jury of filmmakers Suzanne Chisholm (Saving Luna) and Emmanuel Itier (The Invocation) awarded Best Documentary kudos to Garbage Dreams by director Mai Iskander. The Jury also gave a Special Prize to Faubourg Treme: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans by directors Dawn Logsdon and Lolis Eric Elie.

“Much more than a simple environmental story, Garbage Dreams is a compelling and compassionate portrait of modern-day Cairo and its very modern problems,” said Ms. Chisholm. “It gives us a window to the vibrant human culture of this great city, and reminds us that the best solutions to our environmental problems are often found within the very human nature around us.”

Mr. Itier added “Faubourg Treme is a one-of-a-kind story of a unique neighbourhood in a unique city. The unforgettable images and music, and the heartfelt storytelling in this film will resonate with people not only in Fauborg Treme itself, but far from the recovering and resilient city of New Orleans.”

The Shorts Jury of Charles Reilly and Claire Varney selected In the Dark by director Alex Fazeli as the Bermuda Shorts Award winner. A Special Jury Prize was given to Dolores by director Manuela Moreno.

“In the Dark, with its creative cinematography and direction, evoked a sense of darkness and tension throughout, including a twist in the ending that left us wishing it wasn’t over,” Ms. Varney said. “Dolores deserves special mention also. In 10 minutes you are totally drawn into the frustrations and needs of two people waiting for a bus. It is a sharp character study of human behavior, the obstacle of preconceived notions, and the need to connect with another.”

The Bacardi Limited Audience Choice Award will be announced on Monday, 30 March.
